Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, while attending the launch of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship at State House Nairobi today, made pointed remarks about Kenyan MP Babu Owino, accusing him of working with anti-National Resistance Movement (NRM) groups opposed to his administration.

In his address, Museveni expressed skepticism about the intentions of certain individuals within Raila’s camp, singling out Babu Owino.

“There are some individuals in Raila’s group whom I don’t think know what they are doing,” Museveni stated, before elaborating, “You know I am a consumer of intelligence reports, and every time I see Babu. I have never chosen him, but I saw him dealing with an anti-Ugandan group…”

The remarks quickly sparked a response from the Kenyan legislator. Babu Owino took to social media, thanking President Museveni for supporting Raila Odinga’s AUC Chairmanship bid but also defending his political stance.

Although President Yoweri Museveni did not mention who the anti-NRM groups are, Babu Owino has previously been seen hobnobbing Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine.

Museveni affirmed his endorsement for the former Kenyan Prime Minister, insisting that he better understands the challenges of the continent.

“I know Raila from the Nationalists and Pan Africanists,” Museveni said.
