Kenya’s East Africa Cabinet Secretary, Peninah Malonza has revealed that Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and Kenya’s President William Ruto are scheduled to meet to discuss a contentious fuel importation deal.

During a visit to a road construction project in Kitui on January 12, CS Malonza praised President Museveni for his interest in Kenya’s affairs and stressed the need to address the disagreements between the two countries. Notably, Uganda is a significant market for Kenya’s oil, with President Museveni being supportive of Kenyan issues.

Although CS Malonza did not provide specific details regarding the date, time, and location of the meeting, she mentioned that a designated seating arrangement had been prepared for the high-level discussions between President Museveni and other heads of state.

Malonza highlighted Uganda’s position as a crucial market for Kenya’s oil, revealing that Uganda currently purchases 90% of its oil from Kenya. Despite acknowledging differences in governance and practices within East Africa, she emphasized the importance of resolving the fuel importation deal for the mutual benefit of both countries.

The announcement follows government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura’s confirmation that Uganda had filed a lawsuit against Kenya at the East African Community Court, specifically related to the denial of a license for fuel importation through Mombasa Port. Mwaura clarified that Kenya would respect the legal process and await the court’s decision, emphasizing Kenya’s commitment to utilizing its resources strategically.

In response to concerns raised by Ugandan lawmakers, President Museveni assured the public that the upcoming talks with President Ruto would focus on finding an amicable resolution to the contentious fuel importation deal rather than opting for retaliatory measures.
