Karamoja is set to receive US$210,000 in emergency food rescue support to assist communities in some of the areas hardest hit by food insecurity.
The commitment was made during a meeting between Komol Paul, popularly known as Kacheri Boy and District Chairperson of Kotido, and Lodou Dida Julius, ONC Coordinator for Karamoja, with Jeannette Wijnants, Country Director of Welthungerhilfe (WHH).
The initial US$210,000 will target four districts—Napak, Kotido, Kaabong and Moroto—with the intervention focusing on communities facing acute food challenges.
Wijnants also disclosed that €50,000 is being mobilised from another funding source, while efforts are underway to secure an additional US$250,000 from other development partners and funders.
The meeting also highlighted the need to create more employment opportunities for people in Karamoja, particularly through development and humanitarian projects implemented in the region.
Wijnants committed to giving greater attention to employment opportunities for local communities under the organisation’s next project, scheduled to commence in February 2027.
The engagement underscored the importance of combining emergency food assistance with longer-term interventions that create livelihoods and economic opportunities for the people of Karamoja.
