President Yoweri Museveni has dismissed claims that he has been sending people to undermine First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Kadaga, ahead of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections.

Museveni’s strong defense of Kadaga came as he addressed a public rally in Kamuli district as part of his tour of Busoga sub-region that came to a close on Saturday. It is seen as a significant boost to her bid to retain her position as NRM CEC Vice Chairperson (Female), where she is set to face stiff competition from Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.

Speaking at a public rally, Museveni described allegations that he was using people to undermine Kadaga as “lies”, emphasizing that if he had any advice for her, he would tell her directly rather than resorting to backdoor politics.

“That’s an insult to me. If I have any issues with Kadaga, I tell her directly. I don’t send people to backbite her. I have not had any issue with Rebecca, therefore you shouldn’t waste my time.”

A Show of Confidence in Kadaga

Museveni’s strong remarks are widely interpreted as an indication of his continued trust in Kadaga’s leadership within the ruling party. Over the years, Kadaga has been a key figure in NRM, especially in Busoga, where she commands a significant following. The President’s public backing is likely to strengthen her standing among NRM delegates as the party prepares for internal elections in 2025 that promises to be politically charged.

Political analysts argue that in the high-stakes battle for NRM CEC Vice Chairperson (Female), Museveni’s remarks could tip the scales in Kadaga’s favor. With Speaker Anita Among emerging as a formidable challenger, the President’s confidence in Kadaga sends a strong message to NRM members, particularly in Busoga and beyond, about her continued relevance and importance in party leadership.

Kadaga vs. Among: A Tight Race

The contest between Kadaga and Among is expected to be one of the most closely watched races in the upcoming NRM internal elections. While Among has risen through the ranks and currently holds the powerful position of Speaker, Kadaga remains a veteran politician with decades of experience in parliamentary and party leadership.

Observers believe that Museveni’s reassurance of support for Kadaga could solidify her grip on the NRM CEC seat, particularly among delegates loyal to the President’s guidance.

With Museveni dismissing any claims of internal sabotage against Kadaga, the race now shifts to how both women will mobilize support within NRM, setting the stage for a fierce battle ahead.
