Kabaka Returns to Uganda After Namibia Declines Visa Extension

His Royal Highness Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the revered King of the Buganda Kingdom, has returned to Uganda overnight following the Namibian government’s decision not to extend his visa. The King had been in Namibia since April 14, 2024, for medical treatment and recuperation.

The return of the Kabaka comes just days after a statement from Namibia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security clarified their stance on the non-extension of the King’s visa. The Namibian government explained that the King was initially granted a 90-day stay, which is the maximum duration allowed under their immigration laws for non-Namibians.

During his time in Namibia, the King’s subjects, who were reportedly not informed about his medical visit, expressed concern and alleged that the King was being held against his will. These allegations led to demonstrations at Namibian diplomatic missions around the world, calling for the King’s release.

In response, Namibia’s Ministry of Home Affairs stated, “The visit of His Royal Highness Mutebi II was purely private and had no intention to interfere with his medical care.” The Namibian authorities emphasized that the disruptive activities orchestrated by some of the King’s subjects were unwarranted and had put the security of Namibian diplomatic staff at risk.

The situation has highlighted the complexities and sensitivities involved in international relations, particularly when it concerns prominent figures like the Kabaka. Despite the challenges, the Namibian government maintained that their decision was in accordance with national laws and international regulations.

Upon his return to Uganda, King Mutebi II was welcomed by a delegation of Buganda Kingdom officials and well-wishers. They included the Nnabagereka (Queen) Sylvia Nagginda, Prince Junju, Premier Charles Peter Mayiga and other family members. The King’s health and well-being remain a priority for his subjects, who are relieved to have their monarch back on home soil.
