The Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has vowed to sustain relentless military operations against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group in Somalia under the framework of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Speaking after a successful operation by Ugandan troops in Bariire, Gen. Muhoozi confirmed that at least 100 Al-Shabaab fighters had been eliminated in the latest offensive, a significant blow to the terrorist group which has used the Lower Shabelle region as a base for launching attacks on civilians and peacekeepers.

“We will continue to kill every Al-Shabaab terrorist however long it takes! So far, we have killed at least 100 of these fools in Bariire. More will follow,” Gen. Muhoozi stated in a message shared Saturday.

The operation forms part of AUSSOM’s wider mandate to support Somali Security Forces in degrading Al-Shabaab, stabilizing recovered territories, and preparing the ground for a full security handover to Somalia by the end of the AU mission’s mandate.

He also posted photos of captured militants.

Uganda is one of the largest troop-contributing countries under AUSSOM, with its forces deployed in some of the most volatile areas, including Bariire, Bulo Marer, and Mogadishu.

This latest success adds to a series of targeted operations Ugandan forces have led to disrupt terrorist supply routes, training camps, and staging grounds.

Analysts view Uganda’s continued presence in Somalia as both a regional security imperative and a demonstration of Kampala’s commitment to Pan-African peacekeeping.

Gen. Muhoozi’s direct involvement and public stance further signal a more aggressive posture against extremism in the Horn of Africa.

UPDF officials have reiterated that while the mission is dangerous, the troops remain committed and morale is high.

Background

African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), formerly AMISOM, is a multidimensional peace support operation authorized by the African Union and mandated by the UN Security Council.

It aims to build lasting peace by supporting Somali-led security efforts and ultimately ensuring the exit of foreign troops once local forces can independently manage the country’s security.
