Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, held high-level discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir at State House in Juba on Saturday, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing regional stability.

Gen Kainerugaba arrived in Juba earlier in the day, where he was received at Juba International Airport by his South Sudanese counterpart.

Following a brief exchange, he proceeded to State House for a closed-door meeting with President Kiir.

The talks centered on deepening military and security cooperation between Kampala and Juba.

Uganda has been a key security partner to South Sudan, deploying the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at the request of Juba in response to past clashes between government troops and rebel forces.

Later, the CDF visited the tactical headquarters of Operation Mlinzi Wa Kimya—Swahili for Silent Guardian—where he interacted with Ugandan troops and commanders overseeing the mission. He was later joined by South Sudan’s Vice President for further discussions on joint security efforts.

President Kiir expressed gratitude for Uganda’s steadfast role in supporting peace in Africa’s youngest nation, commending the UPDF’s contributions to regional stability.

Beyond security, South Sudan remains one of Uganda’s top trading partners, importing a wide range of goods including construction materials, textiles, and other commodities.

Gen Kainerugaba pledged Uganda’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with South Sudan, noting that this visit is part of a broader series of regional engagements aimed at consolidating peace, security, and economic cooperation.
