The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has deployed Battle Group XLIV (44) to serve under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The flag-off ceremony, held at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-TC) in Singo, Nakaseke District, was presided over by Maj Gen Stephen Mugerwa, Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, representing Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Forces.

Maj Gen Mugerwa urged troops to maintain discipline and uphold the highest standards of conduct while protecting Somali civilians.

“Carry our flag high with good battle discipline. Take orders seriously and avoid unnecessary drama while on the mission,” he said.

He further tasked unit commanders with ensuring accountability and enforcing discipline for mission success.

Brig Gen Patrick Otongo, IPSO-TC Commandant, expressed confidence in the group’s preparedness, confirming all personnel had completed pre-deployment training.

“You have all it takes to perform your duties excellently in the mission area. As IPSO-TC, we wish you all the best in your tour of duty and look forward to welcoming you back,” he said.

Brig Gen Otongo praised Col Julius Nyedwoha, IPSO-TC Chief Instructor, and his team for their efforts, while also thanking the Land Force Headquarters and Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs for their support.
