The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has announced that the Republic of Djibouti, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of South Sudan have officially ratified the new IGAD Treaty, marking a pivotal moment in regional cooperation.
This development follows the adoption of the Treaty by Heads of State and Government during the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Summit, held in Djibouti on June 12, 2023.
The ratification of the Treaty, which represents a significant evolution of IGAD’s regional framework, expands and diversifies areas of cooperation among Member States and strengthens engagements with the international community. Ethiopia also took an additional step by depositing the Instruments of Ratification, showcasing its deep commitment to advancing regional collaboration.
IGAD Executive Secretary’s Remarks
IGAD’s Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, welcomed the progress with enthusiasm, stating, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of Djibouti, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of South Sudan for their decisive action in ratifying the new IGAD Treaty. This significant progress reflects their commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and unity. I encourage all Member States to follow this positive example and complete the ratification process. By doing so, we will further solidify our collective efforts towards peace, stability, and development in the region.”
Dr. Gebeyehu emphasized that the new Treaty is a crucial tool for advancing the region’s collective efforts in addressing challenges related to peace, security, and economic development, while fostering unity and cooperation among Member States.

With the ratification process underway, IGAD remains optimistic that other Member States will follow suit, furthering the regional organization’s goals of peace, stability, and development. The full ratification of the Treaty by all IGAD Member States will pave the way for deeper collaboration in tackling the region’s most pressing issues, from security to trade and development.
