Ethiopia PM Abiy Ahmed Visits Sudan In Bid to End Conflict

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Port Sudan this morning, marking a continuation of his efforts to find sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability amidst ongoing conflicts.

According to reports, PM Abiy is expected to hold talks with Sudan’s Military leader Lt Gen Fattah al-Burhan.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), plunging the nation into a severe humanitarian crisis. The war has led to widespread violence, significant infrastructure damage, and the displacement of millions across regions like Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan. Ethnic tensions have escalated, posing a serious threat to regional stability.

Last week, the Ethiopian leader revealed that his country is committed to ensuring peace reigns in Sudan.

“Ethiopia will take risks to ensure peace in Sudan while adhering to the principle of non-intervention. The peace-loving people of Sudan deserve peace,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said last week.

He added, “We are not willing to solve our border disputes with Sudan through violence, and we will continue supplying electrical power to Sudan despite its inability to pay us now. Ethiopia is not willing to take advantage of Sudan’s misfortune.”

Hew was accompanied by a delegation that includes Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister H.E. Ambassador Taye Atske-Selassie.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s joins a host of global leaders seeking to bring an end to the conflict in Sudan. Two weeks ago, Uganda’s President chaired the AU summit on the Sudan conflict.

The meeting, attended by key stakeholders and members of the African Union, including Moussa Faki Mahamat, the AUC Chairperson, emphasized need for a unified approach to address the conflict in Sudan.

A week later, President Museveni met with US Special Envoy on Sudan, Thomas Perriello at State House Entebbe.

The meeting, attended by Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, and US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp, focused on implementing the African Union’s Peace and Security Council communiqué on Sudan.
