In the wake of escalating tensions between East African nations, the East African Community (EAC) has issued a strong call for diplomatic resolution and cooperation among its partner states. The announcement comes amid recent developments, including the closure of borders between Burundi and Rwanda, as well as simmering tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The East African Community, established to promote mutual benefit and the welfare of the people of East Africa, emphasized the need for harmonious cooperation among its member states. The statement, delivered by Hon. (Dr) Peter Mutuku Mathuki, the EAC Secretary-General, reiterated the commitment to the people-centric nature of integration and urged partner states to uphold these principles.
Without mentioning Thursday’s closure of borders between Burundi and Rwanda, the EAC underscored the importance of using the existing EAC Dispute Resolution Mechanism in resolving conflicts between member states. The statement called for a commitment to peaceful settlement, respecting the integrity and sovereignty of each partner state involved.
In a firm call to action, Hon. (Dr) Peter Mutuku Mathuki encouraged partner states to deploy peaceful means in settling disputes, reminding them to strictly observe the spirit of the EAC Treaty. The Secretariat affirmed its commitment to working closely with the Office of the Chairperson of the Summit of the EAC Heads of State to facilitate a peaceful resolution to any emerging disputes.
As tensions persist, the East African Community remains a beacon of hope for peaceful coexistence and integration in the face of regional challenges.
