The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba on Thursday met with the European Union Ambassador to Uganda, Jan Sadek.

According to Sadek, the discussions focused on security and defense issues impacting Europe, Uganda, and the regions of the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes.

Ambassador Sadek emphasized the importance of collaboration for a safer future, highlighting the mutual interests of Europe and Uganda in maintaining stability and security across these critical regions.

“We had insightful discussions on security and defense issues, affecting Europe, Uganda, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes regions. Collaboration for a safer future is paramount,” Sadek stated.

Since his appointment two months ago, General Muhoozi has been actively engaging with international diplomats to strengthen Uganda’s defense partnerships. He has previously met with envoys from the United Kingdom and the United States, indicating a proactive approach to fostering international security cooperation.

Uganda’s military plays a significant role in regional peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Somalia, where Ugandan troops are a key component of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) now ATMIS. Their presence is crucial in efforts to stabilize the country and combat terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab.

Analysis:

General Kainerugaba’s meetings with high-profile international diplomats, including those from the EU, UK, and US, underscore a strategic effort by Uganda to reinforce its military alliances and enhance regional security cooperation.
