Authorities in Bujumbura have confirmed that a series of powerful explosions that shook the city on Tuesday were caused by an electrical accident at a military ammunition depot in the Musaga area.

According to Burundi’s army spokesperson, Gaspard Baratuza, the blasts originated from “a serious electrical short-circuit at the ammunition store in a military camp,” triggering multiple explosions that reverberated across the economic capital.

The incident sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and forced residents in several neighborhoods to flee or seek shelter as the blasts echoed throughout the city.

In a statement, Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, reassured the public that the situation had been brought under control. He also expressed gratitude on behalf of the Burundian people to those who had shown solidarity in the aftermath of the incident.

“On behalf of the Burundian people, I wish to express my gratitude to all those who, near or far, have shown us their solidarity,” the President said, referring to the fire that broke out at a logistical warehouse within the Musaga military base.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the extent of damage, but investigations into the exact cause and impact of the accident are expected to continue.
