SOROTI, Uganda — Security forces have reportedly arrested former Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) officer Peter Elwelu in Soroti City over alleged involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.

According to Army spokesperson Col Chris Magezi, who announced the arrest, Elwelu was apprehended on Monday evening after reportedly being on the run over the alleged activities.

Magezi said the arrest followed a security operation in which security forces recently recovered 15 guns, military fatigues and two pickup trucks allegedly in Elwelu's possession.

He added that Elwelu would be charged and prosecuted in courts of law over the alleged activities.

The arrest comes amid heightened security concerns in the Teso sub-region, although further details about the alleged plot, the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the specific charges have not yet been disclosed.

Authorities are yet to provide further information on the operation or confirm when Elwelu is expected to appear in court.
