Major General Jack Bakasumba has been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has promoted two senior officers in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), signalling continued restructuring and recognition of long-serving leadership within the military.

In the latest promotions, Major General Jack Bakasumba has been elevated to the rank of Lieutenant General, while Brigadier General James Kinalwa has been promoted to Major General.

Lieutenant General Bakasumba currently serves as the UPDF Chief of Joint Staff. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously held several critical positions including Commandant of the Peace Support Operations Centre, Chief of Joint Staff in the Uganda Police Force, and Chief of Staff for the UPDF Land Forces.

Brigadier General James Kinalwa has been promoted to Major General.

Major General Kinalwa, now serving in the Joint Staff Human Resource Management, is one of the longest-serving officers in the force, widely respected for his institutional memory and commitment to the UPDF.

The promotions, announced on Monday, are part of a broader effort to strengthen the leadership structure of the military under the stewardship of General Muhoozi, who took over as CDF in March 2024.
