AUSSOM Military Chiefs Meet In Kampala To Chart Somalia Stabilization Future

Military chiefs from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) have gathered in Kampala for a strategic meeting aimed at enhancing coordination and shaping key outcomes ahead of the upcoming AUSSOM Extraordinary Summit.

Taking place from April 22 to 25 at Mestil Hotel, the meeting includes senior military leaders from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and — for the first time — Egypt, the latest entrant to the Somalia stabilization mission. Egypt formally joined AUSSOM earlier this year. Under previous frameworks — AMISOM and later ATMIS — Egypt was not a troop-contributing country.

The Kampala meeting serves as a preparatory forum for the anticipated Heads of State Extraordinary Summit, where regional leaders will make high-level decisions on troop deployment, security sector reform support, and the future of peacebuilding efforts in Somalia.

The military chiefs are expected to review operational achievements and challenges, assess Somali Security Forces’ readiness to assume full responsibility, and chart a way forward for troop reconfiguration under AUSSOM’s new mandate. The focus now is on providing technical assistance, training, and targeted support to Somalia’s national institutions while maintaining regional solidarity.

Outcomes of this meeting will be presented to the AUSSOM Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, set to finalize timelines, financial frameworks, and the long-term roadmap for AU engagement in Somalia.
