A joint ATMIS-UPDF and SNAF logistics convoy was struck by a Command Wire Improvised Explosive Device (CWIED) along the Mogadishu-Buffow-Barawe route yesterday. The deadly attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two personnel and left several others injured.
Among the fallen was Major Patrick Awany, a dedicated officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the brother of NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong.
Todwong expressed his grief and pride in a heartfelt tweet, saying, “I celebrate my brother, Maj. Opio Patrick Awany. Your dedication to protecting our country was your code and you approached your duty with unmatched passion. You bravely faced countless battles in the Central African Republic, Eastern DRC Congo, and Somalia. Your life was tragically cut short this morning, 7/7/2024, as you served our continent Africa. May your legacy endure to inspire more heroes. We will forever hold you in our hearts, Patrick. You were a true patriot.”
There has been an outpouring of grief since Todwong tweeting about the tragic news of his his brother who has served the force with distinction.
The UPDF Deputy Spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki, also paid tribute to Major Awany, tweeting, “Maj Opio has been a true representative of the Ugandan Flag. With honor, we offer a final salute as his honorable soul lay at rest. He has been a true fighter for his continent Africa. Farewell Soldier, farewell. Be strong Hon. It is a dark day for us all.”
Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo wrote; “Rt. Hon. Richard Toodwong, Please, accept my deepest Condolences and Sympathy to you and the entire Awany Family. MHSRIP.”
The attack not only claimed the lives of Major Awany and a SNAF personnel but also left several others injured. All casualties have been evacuated to medical facilities for treatment.
ATMIS expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured.
