Burundi has closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the reported entry of fighters from the M23 armed group in to Uvira Town close to the border.
Uvira, on the border with the DRC is about 40-50kms from Bujumbura.
According to authorities in Bujumbura, elements of the rebel movement crossed into Burundian territory, prompting heightened security measures.
The government has deployed additional troops to secure areas near the border and prevent any further escalation in a region already strained by intense fighting. The move comes as heavy clashes continue in South Kivu between Congolese forces, the M23, and several allied armed groups.
The border closure is expected to have immediate humanitarian consequences, as the area serves as a key route for civilians fleeing violence in eastern DRC. Burundian authorities have urged all parties to the conflict to restore calm and respect commitments made under recent peace agreements.
