KAMPALA — The Pan African Movement (PAM) Uganda National Chapter has condemned the United States’ economic, commercial and financial restrictions against Cuba, calling for their immediate and unconditional removal.
In a statement dated August 11, 2026, the movement said the measures imposed on Cuba were adversely affecting ordinary citizens and restricting the country’s access to international finance and trade.
The statement comes ahead of the 100th anniversary of the birth of former Cuban President and revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, which will be commemorated on August 13, 2026.
PAM, together with the Uganda Cuba Solidarity Movement, said it “unequivocally” condemns what it described as the “illegal, unilateral economic, commercial, and financial blockade” imposed by the United States government on Cuba.
The organisation alleged that the measures were contributing to shortages of energy, food and essential medicines, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
It also criticised the alleged blocking of medical supplies destined for Cuba and Washington’s continued designation of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, arguing that the designation restricts the country’s ability to access international financial and trading systems.
PAM invokes Cuba’s role in Africa
The Pan African Movement said Africa had a historic obligation to stand with Cuba, recalling the country’s support for African liberation struggles.
“We can’t forget that Cuba stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Africa in our darkest hours of anti-colonial struggle campaigns, shedding blood for our liberation,” the statement said.
It also highlighted Cuba’s continued deployment of medical personnel to vulnerable communities around the world as part of its case for stronger Africa-Cuba solidarity.
PAM therefore called for:
- An immediate and unconditional end to the US restrictions against Cuba;
- The removal of Cuba from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list;
- Full respect for Cuba’s national sovereignty; and
- Respect for international law.
The statement was signed by Daniel Rugarama, Chairman of the National Executive Committee and Chairman of the Uganda Cuba Solidarity Movement.
