POWER PLAY! Sarah Babirye Kityo Enters Deputy Speaker Contest

Sarah Babirye Kityo, the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukoto East and former Youth MP for Central Region, has officially declared interest in the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.

In a statement released on Sunday, Babirye said her decision followed “deep reflection and engagement,” adding that she was guided by Uganda’s national motto, “For God and My Country.”

“After deep reflection and engagement, and guided by the spirit of ‘For God and My Country,’ I am honored to express my interest in serving as Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Uganda 2026-2031,” she stated.

She added that her ambition is rooted in “accountable leadership” and pledged to continue working with leaders across Parliament and government under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to strengthen democracy, national unity, and service delivery.

Babirye has had a long career in public leadership, first rising to prominence as Youth Member of Parliament for the Central Region before later winning the Bukoto East parliamentary seat. She also previously served as President of the Uganda Netball Federation, where she played a key role in promoting and developing netball in Uganda.

Her announcement comes amid growing behind-the-scenes lobbying and positioning for top parliamentary offices ahead of the 2026–2031 Parliament.
