The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep regret over the recent announcement by the United States of America regarding its intention to withdraw from the global health body. The decision, which could have significant implications for global health security, comes after decades of collaboration between the U.S. and WHO in tackling global health challenges.
WHO emphasized its critical role in protecting global health, including that of American citizens, by addressing the root causes of diseases, strengthening health systems, and responding to health emergencies. The organization has been at the forefront of major disease eradication efforts, including smallpox and polio, and has worked closely with the U.S. in responding to health crises worldwide.
“The United States has been a foundational member of WHO since its establishment in 1948 and has played a key role in shaping the organization’s policies and programs,” a WHO spokesperson stated. “For over 70 years, this partnership has saved countless lives, including those of Americans, by mitigating global health threats.”
The U.S. has actively participated in WHO governance structures, such as the World Health Assembly and the Executive Board, contributing expertise, funding, and leadership in global health initiatives. Over the past seven years, WHO has undergone significant reforms aimed at improving accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact on member states. The organization highlighted that these reforms have been undertaken with the input and support of the U.S. and other member states.
The announcement of the U.S. withdrawal raises concerns about the future of international cooperation in disease prevention and response, particularly in light of ongoing global health challenges such as emerging infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness, and vaccine distribution.
“We hope the United States will reconsider its decision and continue to engage in constructive dialogue to maintain this essential partnership,” WHO stated. “The health and well-being of millions of people around the world depend on strong international collaboration.”
