US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has voiced deep concern over the recent verdict by Uganda’s Constitutional Court, which upheld the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act.
Blinken said that the ruling, which is popular in Uganda, undermines human rights and public health for all Ugandans, while posing grave threats to LGBTQI+ individuals and their allies in the country.
The statement came a day after Uganda’s Constitutional Court upheld the AHA. Blinken warned that Uganda’s stance on equality under the law, particularly regarding LGBTQI+ rights, could deter foreign investors and diminish opportunities for economic growth and development in the country.
Last year, President Yoweri Museveni assented to the bill passed by the country’s parliament. The law is popular in Uganda.
