Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has confirmed that Ugandan Special Forces have entered Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda made the revelation after speaking earlier today, to Gen. Muhoozi.
Last week, Gen Muhoozi said Uganda’s army would be entering Bunia. It is not clear about the scope of operations the SFC will be undertaking. However, it should be noted that the UPDF is deployed in the DRC as part of Operation Shujaa to hunt ADF rebels.
Background and Strategic Implications
Bunia is a strategic town in Ituri, a province plagued by armed group activities and intercommunal violence. The UPDF has been engaged in military operations inside the DRC under the joint Uganda-DRC military agreement, primarily targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a terrorist group responsible for attacks in both countries.
Uganda’s intervention in eastern Congo has often been framed as part of regional security cooperation, with Kampala justifying its operations under agreements with the Congolese government. However, the latest move could signal a new phase in Uganda’s military posture in the region.
