The Uganda Police have confirmed that they received security alerts from the US and UN aimed at preventing Terror attacks, local media reports.
U.S. Embassy and UN Issue Terror Alert for Kampala Ahead of 9/11 Anniversary; The U.S. Embassy in Kampala has issued a security alert to American citizens in Uganda, citing unconfirmed reports of an increased risk of terrorist attacks in the capital. This alert coincides with similar warnings from the United Nations, both of which aim to prevent potential terrorist activities ahead of the September 11 anniversary, a date marking the 2001 attacks in New York that claimed 2,750 lives.
The alerts have prompted Ugandan authorities to enhance security measures throughout Kampala. Mr. Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesman, confirmed that the police have received these alerts from both the U.S. and the UN. He emphasized that the warnings are part of precautionary efforts to thwart any plans by terrorists to carry out attacks in remembrance of 9/11.
In light of these developments, the U.S. Embassy has urged American citizens in Uganda to exercise heightened caution, particularly in public areas such as shopping malls, schools, and popular tourist destinations. The Embassy’s advisory includes recommendations for U.S. nationals to remain vigilant, avoid large public gatherings, maintain a low profile, and be continuously aware of their surroundings.
Additionally, the Embassy encouraged U.S. citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program provides timely alerts and helps the U.S. government locate citizens in case of an emergency.
As security forces in Uganda step up their efforts, the police have reassured the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors in Kampala. The U.S. Embassy and the UN remain in close contact with local authorities and will continue to provide updates as necessary.
Ugandan authorities have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.
