Honourable Betty Amongi, Uganda’s Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, has successfully concluded her mission in Doha, Qatar, by solidifying a Bilateral Labor Agreement between Uganda and Qatar. The agreement, signed during Amongi’s visit, aims to ensure safe and regulated labor migration between the two nations.
The pact covers a wide spectrum of workers, including skilled, semi-skilled, and domestic workers, highlighting a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Ugandan workers seeking employment opportunities in Qatar.
Key aspects such as welfare of workers, health insurance, terms and conditions of work, among others, have been embedded in the agreement, signaling a commitment to promoting fair and ethical labor practices.
Minister Amongi expressed her optimism regarding the potential benefits of the agreement for both countries. She emphasized the importance of establishing frameworks and safeguards to protect the rights and well-being of Ugandan workers abroad, underscoring the significance of the collaboration between Uganda and Qatar in managing labor migration effectively.
As part of the agreement, a Joint Technical Committee is scheduled to meet in May to further discuss and implement the provisions outlined in the agreement. This collaborative effort aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and overall effectiveness in managing labor migration flows between Uganda and Qatar.
