In a pre-dawn operation today, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) successfully intercepted and killed two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb in Kampala.
The counter-terrorism operation was intelligence-led and comes just a day before Uganda commemorates Martyrs Day, a major national religious event that annually attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country and the region.
According to a statement released by the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Colonel Chris Magezi, the UPDF acted swiftly on credible intelligence and neutralized the threat before it could pose any harm to the public or disrupt the upcoming national celebrations.
“This morning, a UPDF counter-terrorism unit intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo. It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” read the statement.
The military did not disclose the identity of the suspects or the terrorist group they were affiliated with, citing ongoing investigations. However, security analysts believe the foiled plot may be linked to regional extremist groups known to target high-profile national events.
Colonel Magezi urged the public to remain calm but vigilant: “We call on all citizens to report any suspicious individuals, objects or activities to the nearest security post for immediate response.”
Security has been beefed up across key installations and pilgrimage sites, particularly in Namugongo, where the main Martyrs Day celebrations will take place on June 3. The Uganda Police Force has also deployed heavily, with drone surveillance, canine units, and sniffer dogs patrolling the area.
The swift UPDF action has drawn praise from citizens and religious leaders who emphasized the importance of safety during the sacred celebrations.
