The Republic of Sudan’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Ahmed Ibrahim, has praised President Yoweri Museveni for providing refuge to the Sudanese community following the outbreak of war in Sudan.
Ambassador Ibrahim made the remarks during the Eid Cup tournament at the Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Sunday.
“I would like to thank the president for hosting the Sudanese community since the start of the situation in my country,” he said.
Uganda’s ambassador to Sudan Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu and SPA Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, Manager of the Office of the NRM National Chairman, were among the high level guests at the tournament.
Sudan plunged into turmoil two years ago when its national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) engaged in a brutal struggle for power. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has devastated the country, displacing millions and causing a severe humanitarian crisis.

As of March 2025, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) had recaptured the presidential palace in Khartoum—a key strategic victory they hope will be a turning point in the war.
Since the start of the war, Uganda has received over 60,000 people fleeing the chaos.
The roots of the conflict trace back to Sudan’s 2021 military coup, after which a council of generals led the country. At the center of the power struggle are:
Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sudanese Armed Forces and leader of the Transitional Sovereign Council.
Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as “Hemedti,” leader of the RSF and former deputy to Burhan.
Disagreements over the transition to civilian rule, particularly the integration of the RSF into the national army and leadership of the new force, escalated into full-scale war.
The ongoing conflict has triggered what the United Nations describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. According to the non-profit organization Action Against Hunger, nearly 25 million Sudanese people urgently require food aid.
