South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ramadan Goc, has confirmed that Monday’s high-level meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations and addressing pressing political developments in the country.
Speaking shortly after the closed-door talks, Minister Goc stated;
“The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Juba and Kampala, with a focus on enhancing cooperation across various sectors. The discussions also addressed the pressing political developments currently taking place in South Sudan.”
President Museveni arrived in Juba earlier on Thursday at the invitation of President Kiir, as the country faces renewed political tension stemming from delays in the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
The agreement, which brought together President Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, has faced challenges around power-sharing, unification of security forces, and preparations for national elections.
As you read this, Riek Macha and his wife are currently under house arrest.
Uganda remains a key regional player in South Sudan’s peace process and has consistently supported efforts led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to stabilize the country.
