South Sudan Elections, Peace Deal Top Agenda in IGAD Talks

June 23, 2026

JUBA, South Sudan – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting South Sudan's peace and political transition following high-level discussions between its Special Envoy to South Sudan, Moussa Mohamed Omar Djama, and Presidential Special Envoy for Special Programs, Adut Kiir.

The meeting, attended by IGAD Head of Mission to South Sudan, Victoria Anib, focused on key developments in the country's ongoing political transition. Discussions centered on the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement, preparations for future elections, progress in the broader transitional process, and plans for an inclusive political dialogue aimed at fostering national consensus and stability.

IGAD emphasized the importance of sustained commitment by all stakeholders to the peace process and reiterated its support for efforts geared toward the full implementation of the peace agreement. The regional bloc noted that successful execution of the transitional roadmap remains critical for South Sudan's journey toward lasting peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development.

The engagement comes as South Sudan continues to navigate a delicate transition, with regional and international partners closely monitoring progress toward the implementation of agreed reforms and preparations for the country's anticipated electoral process. IGAD has consistently played a central role in mediating peace efforts and supporting political dialogue in the world's youngest nation.
