Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Hussein Sheikh-Ali, has revealed intricate details of the proposed multinational forces set to operate within the country following the departure of AU forces ATMIS by the end of this year.
In an exclusive interview with VOA’s Harun Maruf, Sheikh-Ali disclosed that ongoing discussions involve Somalia, the African Union, and the United Nations.
They have collectively agreed to deploy a “lean” multinational force starting January next year, with a primary mandate to safeguard critical infrastructure, logistical hubs for Somali security forces, and areas housing international agencies and foreign embassies.
Importantly, Sheikh-Ali emphasized that the new forces would not engage in combat operations against the extremist group al-Shabaab. Instead, their focus will be on defensive measures to ensure stability and protect vital assets.
The estimated size of the multinational forces is anticipated to range between 3000 and 8000 personnel. Collaboration with an equal number of Somali forces is envisioned, facilitating a gradual handover of responsibilities within a 12-month timeframe. Sheikh-Ali noted that the 12-month presence is subject to extension if deemed necessary.
