SHOCKING DETAILS: South Sudan Gov’t Reveals Why VP Machar Was Arrested

The government of South Sudan has placed First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar under house arrest, citing his alleged role in destabilizing peace and orchestrating attacks against security forces.

In a press statement issued today by the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, the government accused Machar of inciting SPLM/A-IO forces to rebel against the administration, aiming to derail upcoming elections and plunge the country back into war.

Quoting intelligence reports, the statement adds that Machar allegedly directed SPLM/A-IO forces—operating under the guise of the “White Army” or “Naath Defence Forces”—to launch attacks on government positions. On March 4, these forces reportedly overran Nasir garrison, killing a commander and dispersing SSPDF troops. Further incidents on March 25 and 26 saw SPLM/A-IO troops attack their own colleagues in the unified forces and retreat from training centers under Machar’s orders.

In response, President Salva Kiir exercised his constitutional powers to place Machar under house arrest on March 26. The government emphasized that this decision was necessary to safeguard the country’s hard-won independence and maintain stability.

“Dr. Riek Machar and his anti-peace colleagues of the SPLM/A-IO, who are under arrest, will be investigated and brought to book accordingly,” the statement read.

The government urged South Sudanese citizens to remain calm, reaffirming its commitment to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement. It also called upon national and international organizations to assist communities affected by the crisis and report credible information regarding the developments.

Additionally, the statement warned citizens against social media propaganda and misinformation, urging them to disregard inflammatory content that could escalate tensions.

President Kiir has promised his commitment to peace, vowing that South Sudan would not return to war.
