Police Officer Arrested After Rider Is Killed During National Cleaning Day

The Uganda Police Force has arrested a police officer and launched investigations into the shooting death of a boda boda rider during the National Cleaning Day exercise in Ndejje Kanaaba on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on August 29, 2026, within Katwe Police Division.

According to preliminary police information, officers from Ndejje Police Station had been deployed to provide security during the community cleaning exercise.

Police said the deceased was allegedly attempting to force his way through a secured area while riding a motorcycle when Police Constable Allan Okello, attached to Ndejje Police Station, allegedly discharged his firearm.

The rider was shot and died as a result of the incident.

The police officer has since been arrested as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the use of the firearm was justified.

The deceased has been preliminarily identified as Kizito Ronald Jjuuko, a 38-year-old man, based on a National Identification Card.

Uganda Police Force has expressed condolences to Jjuuko’s family, relatives and friends.

Police emphasized that while officers are legally mandated to maintain public order and protect life and property, the use of force must be lawful, necessary and proportionate.

The Force said any use of firearms must also be strictly guided by the law, established police operational procedures and the prevailing circumstances.

Investigations are ongoing to determine exactly what transpired before the fatal shooting.
