Minister of Internal Affairs Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has issued a stern warning to Gender Minister and Oyam South MP Betty Amongi, advising her to focus on serving her constituents rather than attempting to challenge Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng in Lira City.
Otafiire also urged the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) to reconsider its alliance with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) rather than competing for a seat currently held by an NRM member.
The Internal Affairs Minister made the remarks on Saturday in Lira City where Aceng made a grand entry in the company of Otafiire.
He emphasized the need for stability within the ruling coalition, cautioning against internal political battles that could weaken the partnership between the two parties.
Amongi, the Oyam South Member of Parliament and Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, recently announced her candidacy for the Lira City Woman MP seat in the upcoming 2026 elections, setting up a showdown with the incumbent, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. The contest is expected to be closely watched, given Aceng’s influence in Lira City and Amongi’s strong political background within UPC.
Amongi’s decision to shift her political base has sparked debate within political circles, with some seeing it as a test of UPC’s influence in Lango sub-region, while others argue it could strain relations between UPC and NRM.
