On Friday afternoon, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, held a high-level meeting with H.E. Kahinda Otafiire, President of the Global Pan-African Movement and Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The discussions centered on the enduring relevance of the Pan-African Movement and ongoing preparations for its forthcoming Congress. Both leaders recognised the historic mission of the Movement in shaping African identity, fostering unity, and laying the ideological foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of today’s African Union.

Chairperson Youssouf expressed the AU Commission’s full support for the upcoming Pan-African Congress and lauded Uganda’s efforts to reinvigorate Pan-African ideals in light of current global challenges. He noted that in an era marked by geopolitical shifts, youth disenchantment, and socio-economic fragmentation, the Movement’s values remain more urgent than ever.

In addition to the Congress, the two leaders exchanged views on regional peace and security, emphasizing the need for enhanced coordination among AU Member States. The dialogue underscored the significance of preventive diplomacy, mediation, and collaborative peace operations in addressing conflicts across the continent.

Chairperson Youssouf commended Uganda’s longstanding contributions to regional stability and its leadership in fostering cooperation in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa regions.

The upcoming Pan-African Congress is expected to bring together political leaders, civil society, youth, and intellectuals to chart a renewed agenda for African unity, development, and sovereignty.
