With the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Delegates Conference now concluded and Uganda inching closer to the 2026 general elections, political maneuvering within the ruling party has intensified, as senior figures quietly position themselves for a coveted seat on President Yoweri Museveni’s election taskforce.

Traditionally appointed ahead of every major election cycle, the taskforce is handpicked by Museveni—who also serves as NRM National Chairman—to design, coordinate, and execute his nationwide campaign strategy. Its composition, often unveiled shortly after the Delegates Conference, signals the President’s inner circle of trusted mobilisers.

At the Delegates Conference, Museveni was confirmed as the ruling NRM’s party flagbearer, paving the way for him to extend his time at the top. Sources suggest that the 2026 taskforce line-up could be announced within days with the nomination fast approaching.

During the same conference, NRM flag bearers were confirmed in preparation for the National Electoral Commission’s presidential nominations slated for 23rd–24th September 2025, under Section 9 (1) of the Presidential Elections Act.

“The President relies on a combination of intelligence reports, internal party assessments, and advice from trusted aides to pick the most effective mobilisers,” a source close to the leadership revealed. “These are cadres with proven grassroots support and loyalty.”

Already, ministers, MPs, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), and veteran party organisers are lobbying behind the scenes, aligning with influential aides and showcasing their political credentials in hopes of being shortlisted.

“There’s quiet competition going on,” said a senior NRM official. “Being on the national taskforce is not only a mark of trust by the President but also a major boost to one’s political profile.”

Among the entities tipped for inclusion is the Office of the NRM National Chairman, which continues to play a strategic role in the party’s mobilisation machinery.

Also, the NRM Secretariat based in Kyadondo will be among those to take a portion in the taskforce, with sources saying the Patriotic League of Uganda will also feature.
