Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has publicly declared his unwavering support for Raila Odinga’s bid to become the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, citing Odinga’s commitment to Pan-Africanism and true leadership.

Speaking at the State House in Nairobi during the official unveiling of Odinga’s candidacy, Museveni emphasized that his endorsement is not a gesture of political favor but a recognition of Odinga’s deep-rooted vision for Africa.

“Raila is not seeking a job or career advancement; he is a true leader,” Museveni stated, underscoring that Odinga’s leadership transcends personal ambitions.

Museveni recounted a recent visit from Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Youssouf, who sought Uganda’s support for his own bid for the AUC chairperson role. While Museveni warmly welcomed Youssouf, he made it clear that his allegiance was with Odinga.

“Before I came, there was a young man from Djibouti who came to tell me he was their candidate. Of course, I greeted him warmly, we took photographs, and had a cup of tea,” Museveni said. “But I told him I was coming here to support Raila because he is the candidate fit for this job.”

Museveni highlighted that the AUC chairperson position requires more than just political acumen; it demands vision, conviction, and a profound understanding of the continent’s needs.

“This is not just a job for anyone; it’s a job for someone who has the vision, conviction, and knowledge to lead Africa forward,” he asserted.

Odinga, a long-time advocate of Pan-Africanism and former Kenyan Prime Minister, has gained widespread support across the continent for his dedication to uniting African nations and driving sustainable development. Museveni’s endorsement adds significant weight to Odinga’s campaign, positioning him as a strong contender for the top AU position.

The event was attended by three Presidents from East Africa; Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), and Salva Kiir (South Sudan). Also in attendance are Burundi’s Prime Minister of Burundi Gervais Ndirakobuca, former Presidents Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania) and Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria).
