President Yoweri Museveni hosted a pivotal meeting at State House, Entebbe, with investors from Strand Hanson Ltd, centered on a proposal for lithium mining in Ntungamo district. The aim behind this strategic initiative is to enable local manufacturing of electric car batteries, reducing Uganda’s dependency on imported batteries and cutting unnecessary costs.
The meeting, which took place on Thursday afternoon, delved into the significance of mining lithium locally as a key component in the production of electric car batteries. President Museveni expressed strong support for the proposal, highlighting the critical role it could play in Uganda’s move towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options.
Acknowledging the country’s current reliance on imported batteries for electric vehicles, President Museveni emphasized the potential for a robust domestic market for locally manufactured batteries. He assured the investors of a receptive market for the batteries produced from the locally mined lithium, thereby bolstering the prospects for their venture.
The proposed lithium mining in Ntungamo district represents a promising opportunity for Uganda to establish itself as a key player in the electric vehicle battery manufacturing sector within the region.
