President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been for an official visit to Ethiopia as Uganda and Ethiopia intensify diplomatic engagement amid evolving regional security dynamics in East Africa and the Horn of Africa.

The invitation was conveyed on Monday by H.E. Etsegenet Yimenu, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Uganda, during a courtesy call on Hon. Okello Oryem, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala.

According to officials, discussions focused on regional peace and security, bilateral cooperation, and Ethiopia’s strategic role in stabilising the Horn of Africa. Uganda pledged its strong support for Ethiopia’s regional initiatives and its broader leadership role in addressing cross-border security challenges.

Hon. Oryem reiterated Uganda’s commitment to peaceful dialogue, cooperation, and stability, noting that sustained diplomatic engagement remains critical as the region navigates complex political and security transitions.

The meeting also highlighted Uganda’s continued backing of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Kampala views as a transformative project for regional development, energy security, and economic integration.

Ambassador Etsegenet spoke of Ethiopia’s appreciation for Uganda’s consistent support and emphasized Addis Ababa’s desire to further strengthen long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries. The proposed presidential visit is expected to deepen cooperation in political, security, and economic spheres, when it happens.

Uganda and Ethiopia maintain historically cordial relations and work closely within regional frameworks, including IGAD and the African Union, on peacebuilding, security cooperation, and development initiatives across the Horn of Africa.

Ambassador Etsegenet was accompanied by Mr Robel Admassu, head of Political Affairs at the Ethiopian Embassy in Kampala.
