Museveni Holds Talks With ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan

Uganda’s President Yoweri Musevenion Saturday hosted the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim A. A. Khan KC, at State House Nakasero.

Although details of the meeting are still scanty, ICC posted on X saying the high-profile meeting focused on a broad spectrum of issues pertinent to the work of the Office of the Prosecutor.

The discussions, described as productive delved into various topics aimed at strengthening cooperation between Uganda and the ICC. Sources close to the meeting indicated that the leaders explored strategies to enhance accountability and justice for international crimes, with a particular emphasis on the ICC’s role in the region.

The State House Nakasero meeting underscored Uganda’s commitment to working closely with international institutions to address issues related to justice, peace, and security. President Museveni reaffirmed his country’s support for the ICC’s mandate while expressing the need for a fair and balanced approach to international justice.

On Wednesday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) will deliver the order for reparations to victims in the case The Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen on Wednesday, 28 February 2024.

On 4 February 2021, Trial Chamber IX found Dominic Ongwen guilty for a total of 61 crimes comprising crimes against humanity and war crimes, committed in Northern Uganda between 1 July 2002 and 31 December 2005 as LRA rebels commander under Joseph Kony. On 6 May 2021, Trial Chamber IX sentenced Dominic Ongwen to 25 years of imprisonment. On 15 December 2022, the Appeals Chamber confirmed the decisions of Trial Chamber IX on Dominic Ongwen’s guilt and sentence. The conviction and the sentence are now final. On 18 December 2023, Mr Ongwen was transferred to Norway to serve his sentence of imprisonment. On 6 May 2021, the Chamber issued an order for submissions on reparations.
