Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) construction project in Tororo District, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s efforts to modernize and streamline its transport infrastructure.
Speaking at the event on Thursday, the President emphasized the importance of rationalizing the transport sector to address inefficiencies and reduce costs.
“Our transport system is irrational. Roads are overcrowded with cars and cargo, leading to slow movement, increased traffic, and damaged roads,” Museveni said.
He added, “This railway is therefore part of rationalization, ensuring a more efficient system where cargo moves by railways and waterways, while petroleum products are transported through pipelines.”
Economic and Efficiency Gains
The President highlighted the economic advantages of the SGR, noting that it will slash transportation costs for businesses and boost trade efficiency. Transporting a 20-foot container from Mombasa to Kampala by train will cost 50% less than by road. Additionally, the railway is expected to reduce the time it takes for cargo to travel from Mombasa to Kampala from 14 days to just 24 hours. For passengers, travel speeds will increase from the current 35 kilometers per hour to 120 kilometers per hour.
“The railway system is not only cheaper but also more efficient. This project will significantly improve our regional trade competitiveness and ease the burden on our roads,” Museveni stated.
Addressing Duplication in Government
The President also referenced a recent debate in Parliament on rationalization, particularly regarding overlapping roles between the Ministry of Transport and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). He noted that projects like the SGR align with the rationalization agenda to eliminate duplication and enhance efficiency.
“Why are the Ministry of Transport and UNRA duplicating efforts? Rationalization helps to address such inefficiencies,” Museveni said.
International Collaboration
The President extended his gratitude to the Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Yapi Merkezi Holding, a Turkish construction company spearheading the project.
“I thank President Erdoğan and Yapi Merkezi Holding. They are very active people, and I believe we shall do good work together,” Museveni said, lauding the partnership as an example of effective international collaboration.
A Transformative Vision
The SGR project is part of Uganda’s broader strategy to modernize its transport network and integrate it with regional systems. By shifting cargo transport from roads to rail, the government aims to reduce road congestion, lower maintenance costs, and accelerate economic growth.
