The world of athletics is mourning the untimely demise of marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who lost his life in a tragic road traffic accident on Sunday at the age of 24. The accident, which occurred on the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road in Kenya, also claimed the life of Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, who was accompanying the Kenyan distance runner.
Kelvin Kiptum rose to prominence as one of the most promising talents in road running in recent years. His meteoric rise began in December 2022 when he made an impressive marathon debut in Valencia, clocking 2:01:53. Less than a year later, in just his third marathon, he shattered the world record, completing the Chicago Marathon in a remarkable time of 2:00:35.
These accomplishments, coupled with his victory at the London Marathon and a course record of 2:01:25, led to him being named the 2023 World Athlete of the Year for men’s out-of-stadia events.
Born and raised in Chepsamo village in Chepkorio, near Eldoret in the Rift Valley Kenya, Kiptum’s journey from working on his family’s cattle farm to becoming a world-renowned marathon runner was an inspiring tale. Starting his running career at the age of 13, he quickly made his mark in local competitions, eventually winning the Eldoret Half Marathon in 2018 at the age of 18.
His signature approach of accelerating in the second half of marathons became his trademark, setting records and earning him a spot among the distance running elite. Kiptum had been gearing up for the Rotterdam Marathon in April 2024, aiming to break the two-hour barrier for the marathon on a record-eligible course.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed deep sorrow, stating, “An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.” The athletics community, along with fans worldwide, extends condolences to the families, friends, teammates, and the entire Kenyan nation, mourning the loss of a remarkable talent and promising young athlete.
Kenya’s President William Ruto posted on X saying, “An extraordinary sportsman has left an extraordinary mark in the globe. Our thoughts are with the family and the sporting fraternity. Rest In Peace.”
