The Islamic Republic of Iran has formally petitioned the United Nations Security Council for an emergency session following what it described as “a brazen and unlawful act of aggression” by the State of Israel.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Security Council President Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned a series of Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory, including attacks on nuclear facilities and targeted assassinations in the capital, Tehran.
The letter, accuses Israel of launching “a coordinated series of military assaults targeting several Iranian cities,” including the Natanz nuclear site, which operates under the full safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Iranian government warned that the strike risks a radiological disaster and represents “a grave violation of international law” and a threat to global peace and security.
“This reckless attack has not only endangered Iranian civilian lives, but also posed an alarming threat to regional and international peace by risking a radiological disaster,” the letter stated, calling the targeting of nuclear facilities “a blatant violation of international law.”
In a further escalation, Iran claims Israeli operatives carried out the targeted killings of senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists in Tehran. Iran labeled the assassinations as “clear instances of state terrorism,” and noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “publicly and arrogantly claimed responsibility,” which Tehran says amounts to an open admission of state-sponsored murder.
Calling Israel “the most terrorist regime in the world,” Araghchi emphasized that these actions violate Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. He called on the Security Council to condemn the attacks and “take urgent and concrete measures” against Israel.
In a strongly worded missive, Iran reaffirmed its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, warning that it would “respond decisively and proportionately” to what it called “cowardly acts.” The letter concluded with a grave warning that Israel “will come to deeply regret this reckless aggression.”
There has been no official response from the Israeli government to the Iranian allegations beyond remarks attributed to Prime Minister Netanyahu, who reportedly justified the operations as pre-emptive actions to neutralize threats from Iran’s military infrastructure and nuclear program.
UN officials confirmed receipt of the Iranian letter and stated that consultations are ongoing regarding a potential Security Council meeting. However, diplomatic sources indicate that a consensus on convening an emergency session remains elusive due to divisions among the Council’s permanent members.
The international community is watching closely as tensions between the two regional powers continue to rise. Analysts warn that without swift diplomatic intervention, the situation could spiral into a broader conflict in the Middle East, with global implications for energy security and non-proliferation.
