Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni on Monday hosted Hon. Tète Antonio, the Angolan Minister of International Relations and Special Envoy to President João Manuel Lourenço, at State House.

The envoy delivered a special message from President Lourenço, as the two leaders delved into critical discussions on bilateral cooperation and pressing regional matters.

President Museveni praised Angola’s diplomatic efforts, particularly its leadership in promoting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of the Luanda Process, an initiative established under the 2022 Luanda Roadmap to de-escalate tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and foster peace in eastern DRC. As a key broker of the ceasefire between the two nations, Angola is set to host a high-stakes summit on December 15, bringing together DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame for face-to-face peace talks.

It aims to build on previous diplomatic engagements to end hostilities in eastern DRC, where persistent conflict has destabilized the region and caused significant humanitarian crises. Uganda, which shares borders with both Rwanda and the DRC, has consistently advocated for peace and regional integration.

Hon. Tète Antonio’s visit to Uganda also follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent trip to Angola, signaling growing international interest in Angola’s pivotal role in regional peacebuilding. President Lourenço has emerged as a key mediator in the Great Lakes region, leveraging Angola’s influence to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation among neighboring states.

President Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s support for the Luanda Process and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to address security challenges, strengthen trade, and foster socio-economic development.
