General Salim Saleh held talks Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.
The meeting also included Dr. James Nyoro, former Governor of Kiambu County in Kenya, at his base in Gulu.
Kadaga is also the NRM Vice Chairperson (Female), however, according to a post by the minister, discussions focused on trade in the region.
During the meeting, Gen. Saleh and Kadaga reminisced about his brief tenure as a Member of Parliament before engaging in an extensive discussion on trade barriers within the East African region.
The leaders explored strategies to enhance cross-border trade, improve economic cooperation, and address key challenges affecting businesses and regional integration.
This discussion comes at a time when the East African Business Council (EABC) has urged the East African Community (EAC) member states to urgently resolve persistent non-tariff barriers (NTBs) that continue to hamper intra-regional trade.
According to the EABC, NTBs—such as excessive border delays, licensing restrictions, and unpredictable trade policies—have significantly affected businesses and economic growth in the region. Addressing these challenges remains a priority for policymakers aiming to strengthen regional economic integration.
