IGAD Signs Grant Agreement with Sweden to Boost Regional Peace & Security

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, signed a grant agreement with the Government of Sweden aimed at bolstering IGAD’s peace and security initiatives.

Signing of the agreement, took place on the margins of a trilateral meeting involving the IGAD Committee of Ambassadors, the IGAD Secretariat, and Development Partners.

The trilateral meeting, held in Djibouti, brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on actionable strategies to enhance regional stability and cooperation.

Dr. Workneh, in his remarks, highlighted the fruitful discussions with the IGAD Committee of Ambassadors and welcomed the engagement of Development Partners. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address issues of mutual concern.

“Had fruitful discussions with the IGAD Committee of Ambassadors as we welcome our Development Partners to the table to further explore actionable strategies to address issues of common concern,” Dr. Workneh stated. “Pleased to sign a grant agreement with the Government of Sweden, on the sidelines of the meeting, to support our peace and security initiatives in the region. Grateful for the steadfast support from the Government and people of Sweden.”

 

The grant agreement with Sweden highlights a shared commitment to fostering stability and cooperation within the IGAD region. The Swedish support is expected to enhance IGAD’s capacity to address peace and security challenges, contributing to sustainable development and regional integration.

Hans Henric Lundquist, Ambassador of Sweden to Ethiopia and Djibouti. Permanent Representative to the African Union, IGAD and UNECA, signed on behalf of Sweden.

“We are committed to fostering stability in the Horn of Africa,” Ambassador Hans said.

IGAD’s Committee of Ambassadors, the Secretariat, and Development Partners convened in Djibouti to chart a way forward for regional peace and security. The meeting was opened by Dr. Workneh, who reaffirmed IGAD’s dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region.
