As the protracted conflict in Sudan marks its one-year anniversary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has issued a strong appeal to all parties involved to cease hostilities and engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve their differences. In a statement released today, Dr. Workneh emphasized the critical need for a concerted effort to tackle the severe humanitarian crisis and widespread human suffering resulting from the ongoing conflict.

“The enduring conflict spanning over 12 months has inflicted untold suffering upon millions of Sudanese citizens, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation,” Dr. Workneh stated, highlighting the deep impacts on the stability of not only Sudan but also the broader region.

Dr. Workneh called upon all stakeholders, including local leaders and international partners, to collaborate closely with IGAD and its appointed Special Envoy to secure a nationwide cessation of hostilities. He underscored the importance of initiating a Sudanese-led political process, affirming that a political settlement remains the only viable solution for achieving a comprehensive and sustainable resolution to the conflict.

The statement from IGAD reiterated the organization’s commitment to working alongside the African Union, neighboring countries, and relevant Sudanese stakeholders to foster lasting peace and stability in the region.
