Uganda continues to strengthen its role as a pillar of regional security as Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, met with the European Union Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Jan Sadek, at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe.

The discussions centered on regional security issues of mutual concern, with Uganda reaffirming its commitment to fostering peace and stability in the Great Lakes region and beyond. The UPDF has been instrumental in various peacekeeping and counterinsurgency operations, including efforts to combat terrorism in Somalia under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and stabilization initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through joint military operations.

General Kainerugaba expressed appreciation for Ambassador Sadek’s continuous engagement with Uganda, highlighting the importance of strong diplomatic and security partnerships between Uganda and the EU. “Uganda remains committed to regional security, and we appreciate the EU’s support in addressing emerging threats,” he noted.

Ambassador Sadek, in turn, commended the UPDF for its proactive role in promoting regional peace and security, particularly in countering armed groups destabilizing the region. He reaffirmed the EU’s willingness to work closely with Uganda in tackling shared security challenges, including cross-border threats, violent extremism, and humanitarian crises resulting from conflict.

This engagement comes at a time when Uganda is at the forefront of regional security efforts, navigating complex geopolitical dynamics, including conflicts in eastern DRC and South Sudan. The meeting underscores the growing recognition of Uganda’s role in shaping regional security strategies through military cooperation and diplomatic dialogue.

Analysts believe Gen Muhoozi and EU envoy’s signal a continued commitment to collaborative security frameworks that safeguard both national and regional stability.
