Held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the event drew attendees from various sectors to commemorate the life and service of a patriot who played a critical role in shaping Uganda’s military and political landscape.
In his speech, President Museveni delved into the historical context of African struggles, emphasizing the colonial and post-colonial challenges faced by Uganda. “Gen. Aronda understood very well our four ideological principles: Patriotism, Pan-Africanism, social-economic transformation, and democracy. These principles guided his approach to leadership within the UPDF, and it is because of officers like him that Uganda has seen significant development in sectors such as security and welfare,” Museveni remarked.
In attendance were members of Uganda’s military top brass, defense attachés, and members of the public.
The President also reflected on the evolution of Uganda’s military, from the days of colonial subjugation to the establishment of a “new type” of army, built on patriotism and the desire for socio-economic transformation. He credited Gen. Aronda with playing a pivotal role in maintaining discipline within the UPDF and founding key initiatives like the Wazalendo Sacco, which improved soldiers’ welfare.
President Museveni called on military leaders to root out corruption and inefficiencies that could undermine the progress made by dedicated officers like Gen. Aronda. He concluded by encouraging the current generation of soldiers to build on the foundation laid by their predecessors, ensuring that Uganda’s defense forces remain strong, disciplined, and people-oriented.
The memorial lecture marked nine years since the passing of General Aronda Nyakairima, a former Chief of Defence Forces, remembered for his integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Uganda’s security and development.
