Ex AMISOM Commander Gen Lukwago Takes Charge as UPDF Reinforces South Sudan Mission

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Commander Land Forces (CLF), Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, has urged South Sudan-bound troops to remain vigilant and mission-focused as they prepare for deployment.

Speaking at the 4 Infantry Division Headquarters in Gulu, Lt Gen Muhanga emphasized the need for resilience, discipline, and adaptability in executing their tasks.

The troops are part of Operation Mlinzi wa Kimya, a recently launched mission aimed at stabilizing South Sudan. The operation commenced on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with the deployment of special operations forces units through Juba International Airport. Since then, additional UPDF task force elements have been reinforced through Bibia and Nimule, key entry points along the Uganda-South Sudan border.

The mission is under the command of Brig Gen Anthony Mbuusi Lukwago, an experienced battlefield strategist. Brig Gen Lukwago, who previously led Ugandan troops under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), is expected to bring his expertise in counter-insurgency and peacekeeping to the new assignment.

Lt Gen Muhanga underscored the importance of the troops’ presence in South Sudan, stating that their role is critical in fostering regional stability. “Your dedication and discipline will determine the success of this mission. Remain vigilant, work as a team, and uphold the core values of the UPDF,” he told the soldiers.

This latest deployment underscores Uganda’s continued commitment to regional peace and security, particularly in South Sudan, where intermittent conflict continues to threaten stability. The UPDF has a long history of participating in peace support operations across Africa, including its contributions to peacekeeping efforts in Somalia and the Central African Republic.

The Joint Task Force Hodari, under which the UPDF contingent operates will work closely with regional and international partners to enhance security and protect civilian populations in South Sudan.
