EAC Leaders Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Eastern DRC, Urge Tshisekedi To Talk To Rebels

The East African Community (EAC) Heads of State convened virtually for the 24th Extra-Ordinary Summit to address the deteriorating security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Wednesday’s summit brought together Presidents Yoweri Museveni, William Ruto (Kenya), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia), Samia Suluhu Hassan (Tanzania), Évariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), Paul Kagame (Rwanda).

The summit deliberated on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, where escalating violence has resulted in loss of lives and suffering, particularly among women and children. In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the leaders expressed deep concern over the crisis and extended condolences to affected families.

EAC Heads of State also raised alarms over attacks on diplomatic missions, embassies, and staff in Kinshasa. They urged the DRC government to ensure the protection of diplomatic facilities and personnel.

Amid escalating hostilities, the summit called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by all parties involved in the conflict.

The leaders emphasized the need to facilitate humanitarian access to affected populations. Additionally, the summit strongly urged the DRC government to engage all stakeholders, including the M23 rebel group and other armed factions, in direct dialogue to achieve a peaceful settlement.

They also proposed to hold a joint EAC-SADC meeting to address the situation.
